Apparently not .. But it also could have happened naturally, via simple mutation - like the one that created the relatively deadly 1918 influenza virus, out of a “normal” seasonal flu bug.

Furan cleavage being the main issue according to people who know, though I have no clue.

There are other matters too and Ron Unz gave very good information and ideas

One very plausible explanation I've read is that the lab obtained samples of the virus from that mine/cave where several workers died after exposure. They attempted to either work out its gain of function or attempted to create a bat vaccine out of it, and it escaped the lab.

We are lucky it was not worse. We have to stop tempting disaster with this stuff before it kills us all.
