I could derive it with set theory, but I always prefer to start with an intuitive approach. E.g. consider the math puzzle 2^x = x^2. It is quite challenging to solve with math. But intuitively it is obvious that x=2 and x=4 are the two natural answers (there is also a 3rd answer, but not natural or satisfying).

Back to your puzzle...since the person could only count and flip, the only possible answer was to count 30 coins and flip them. That was the intuitive answer, which we can then validate with math.

Here's another intuitive answer that I felt I had to provide because the author was the exact opposite of what he claims to be:

and of course, flipping the 30 with the 6 blue, would turn into 24 blue and 6 red.
and then 24 blue in each pile?
