I think it is fascinating that it is theorized that the "Russian flu" outbreak in the 19th century that killed a million people... was a bovine coronavirus that jumped to humans and is now just a harmless common cold virus.

Started out very lethal, now harmless.

I think people overrate this tendency for viruses to become milder. As far back as I can remember, I don’t recall Influenza showing such a tendency. Or Hepatitis C. It just may not to be something we can count on.
