Cold climate, minimal heat loss, long winters with nothing better than drafts to think about. Looks silly but might cut down on shouts to shut the door. It took me years to not prance a little when I walked, from growing up in a cold climate, walking on snow and ice.

Hrumph - from 1979 - no wonder they have those types of doors - with handles they are not dinosaur proof as anyone who has watched the instructional movie "Jurassic Park" knows. In "Jurassic Park" if they had only used round knobs, those dinosaurs would not have been able to go from room to room so easily! Wait - what? You feel a draft?
