Back when 1970s inflation nearly drove my grandmother out of her house that her older brother built for her in the sand dunes of SF that became the Sunset District. It was "affordable housing" back then. My grandfather worked as a soda fountain guy and my grandmother raised my father and worked as Christmas and other holiday help at the SF department stores an easy and safe bus ride downtown. Grandpa died in the 1960s and so her older sister, who never married but cut hair for a living even then, moved in to help with expenses. The soaring property taxes was killing people who owned their homes but didn't have high paying jobs that kept up with inflation. So.. we passed Prop. 13 that says the property tax base is set when you buy the property so what you pay is known and something you can afford or you don't buy the house. Then we limit the maximum gain in taxes each year to inflation or 2%, whichever is lower. Of course the parasites who live off what governments can collect and want to retire at 60% salary for their CALPERS and CALSTERS pensions at age 52 hate it... but those of us who have to work until age 70 to get a max Social Security payment and bought our house on better land than we could really afford at the time decades ago in anticipation of massive inflation.... are quit happy with our brilliance and Prop. 13. They've started to erode some of Prop 13 at the edges... such as kids who inherit their parents homes don't get to keep the same rate if they move into the house or rent it out. Many were renting them out and that was not good, but those who lived in the homes to care for their parents should get to stay with the lower base... but now I think they have a $1M limitation and with "modest" homes running $2M to $5M in the less crime ridden, less crowded parts of the peninsula, the kids have to sell or take on roommates for the higher property taxes. Sadly, that is driving many with jobs like butchers and mechanics out of their parent's home... often out of state, which adds to our massive inflation as then the rent soars when high tech workers replace them. Government really needs the massive inflation to keep their whole scam floating... so now the scam is open the border to let in low income people, show pictures of homeless living in the streets, raise taxes with special bonds to build low cost housing and cram more people into our once nice suburbs so the builders who back the politicians get rich and the politicians gain more power offering freebies and subsidies to those who move in. It is CRUSHING the middle class and the scum at the top want to call us racists or other names rather than admit THEY are the problem.
