Cheeky Kid, All - Re: Zip Heads question

I have just gotten off the phone with Iomega, where I was told that there's a pretty good reason why you might get conflicting answers to the question "Do Zip's read/write heads make contact with the media?"

What I was just told is that there is a pad on either side of each read/write head of a Zip drive. That's two pads per head. The pads contact the surface of the media, and keep the read/write head suspended just above the surface.

The read/write heads themselves do not make contact with the media surface at any time under normal operating conditions.

I was also told that Iomega does not make detailed design documents available to the public, so I can't get written confirmation of this.

I had formerly believed that Zip drives made use of the Bernoulli effect, but I was wrong about that.

RE: Flash prices

Allen and all,

>They had an 8MB card for only $99.

One fifth the capacity of Clik! for ten times the price.
That's sure got me worried. <g>

Cheers, Tom (long IOM)
