It's doing the same thing your body does when you get sick; run a fever. In this case, we are the organisms causing the infection.
I get the illustration. Al Gore once claimed that the planet is "running a fever."

I just don't agree with the notion that the planet will "heal itself" by using nature as an immune system against the "virus" of humanity. That's straight out of the movie Avatar (which if you haven't seen lately, I highly recommend it).

In any case, like I (and others) have said before, the planet's ecosystem is resilient. It has survived an asteroid strike that killed the dinosaurs and most other species at the time.

But it didn't do it by actively closing the wound that the asteroid left behind. Instead, the dust simply settled out, plants began to grow again, temperatures recovered, and wildlife flourished once again.

Bottom line is that George Carlin, in his nihilistic and cynical way, kind of unintentionally argued in favor of the environmentalist viewpoint.
