Keep in mind that in ALL parliamentary systems, the people never vote for who shall be the head of state. That is unique to the United States. They want to eliminate that ability,
Electing the CEO almost directly gives a lot of power to the plebs. Our founders did it - but no one else ever went this far.

Rome, under the Republican system, had something analogous - the only political body that could adopt new laws under their Constitution was the Plebeian Assembly. But, it seems, few people were even aware of it. By “tradition”, whatever the Senate decided was law.

The people of Donbas were condemned to a war by Putin in 2014. How much Russian actions really created the separatists and how much they simply supported those who wanted to separate anyway can be debated but even if its the latter they revolted when they saw the chance both from Ukraine looking weak by losing Crimea with almost no fight and by Russian offers of support.

That war would have been over by 2015 with Ukraine winning, if Russia didn't step up the intervention. Instead it settled down to a very low level war with a couple of dozen civilians dying a year (killed by both sides). Then Russia stepped things up again (quite dramatically) almost a year ago and killed far more Russian speakers in Donbas then Ukraine ever had.
