Brumar,
I feel pretty confidant we'll recover almost all of the equipment on the balloon though we won't be briefed on what they find out.
I'm pretty sure we can recover all of the equipment, but I'm not sure it will reveal all that much about China's true capabilities.

I now believe more than ever that China is just trolling us with these Winnie the Pooh balloons. They're cheap and they've already caused a lot of panic.

Tenchu's Thoughts: The QUALITY is the Quantity

This article from the WSJ popped up in my feed:

Russia Throws Soldiers Into Ukraine Firing Line to Gain Inches - WSJ

The subheader caught my eye:
Moscow shows scant regard for the lives of its conscripts, but the battle for Bakhmut is also costly for Ukrainian defenders
This seems to suggest that Ukraine's losses are equivalent in number to RuZZian losses, but nowhere in the article does it explicitly mention that.

Instead, the clear implication is that RuZZia's dead soldiers are expendable while Ukraine's dead soldiers are not. The unit that the WSJ was embedded with was clearly inflicting many more RuZZian casualties than they were suffering. But every time a soldier dies within that unit, the loss is deeply felt.

Some other notable points gleaned from the article:

- The article described Ukraine's defenders as a "hodgepodge of units, including air-assault forces, border guards and military reserves."

- The Vagner thugs are reportedly tougher and more motivated than the RuZZian regulars, who in turn are presumably better than the so-called "mobliks." From the article:

The Wagner fighters are badly equipped, sometimes lacking body armor or even basic uniforms, Ukrainian soldiers said. But they fight with greater zeal than regular Russian units, which tend to withdraw or surrender when they meet Ukrainian resistance.
- The defenders in Bakhmut report that they need more artillery, more ammunition, and more eyes in the sky. They especially need more drones with night-vision because the RuZZians love to advance under the cover of night. Despite how much NATO is supplying Ukraine, it supposedly is not enough.

- Ironically, serving as a defender in Bakhmut is clearly a game of RuZZian roulette. Again from the article:
“I need men. Good men. Spirited men,” he said. “Experience isn’t the most important thing. Here, the most experienced person can live for one day, and the least experienced person for months. It’s roulette.”
That's the reality in Bakhmut. That's the reality of PooTin's war of choice. And for what? Some perceived existential threat that doesn't exist?

Fuck PooTin. Fuck him to hell.

Brumar, you're probably sick of balloon news by now, so hopefully this will be the last one for a while:

Mystery Over Why Chinese Spy Balloon Wasn't Shot Down Over Alaska Solved (msn.com)

The excuse again was the potential loss of human life, but they were also interested in recovering the equipment with as minimal damage as possible.

OK, so why wasn't it shot down in the waters off the coast of Alaska? The excuse is that those waters are cold, and the depths vary widely from 150 feet to 18,000 feet. The waters off the coast of Myrtle Beach are warmer and have depths of less than 100 feet.

I personally think these arguments are rather weak.

But I also think that these balloons didn't really gather all that much sensitive info regarding our homeland defenses, which is why the military didn't feel any urgency whatsoever to shoot it down.

It's more political symbolism than anything.
