Great article. My GF of 20 yrs, damn more reminders of geezer status, born in Taiwan, says TSMC is having trouble recruiting engineers from TSMC Taiwan to move to the US to transfer the process technology. The fear was they would have to work much harder than they do in Taiwan and not get compensated to make up for it. That article sort of covers this.

Also, I'm pretty sure the Arizona factory is not 50 miles from an international city like Taipei. Hsinchu, where they have TSMC factories, has a zoo, lakes, a river and an ocean. Probably not all that different than San Jose's distance from San Francisco.

Taiwan is hot and humid in the summer while Arizona is a desert. They move there and probably don't have much to do but work all the time, socialize with other expat families and go shopping in air conditioned buildings that might be a decent drive compared to an easy subway or bus ride in Taiwan.
