Substance abuse was an issue in the 1980s here where HP went so far as to make it official policy to fire any manager caught using any illegal drug in the presence of an underling.

Many of us are reformed boozers too much like Bush 43.

My guess is the pandemic and work from home will "spark" another surge into rehabs as those workers will have to show up at the office more often.

Speaking of targeted bioweapons
Still, Covid-19 would make a terrible bio-weapon killing as many Chinese as it did any of China's adversaries. No, if there was a bioweapon it is probably still in the lab and what escaped was a similar virus which was used in day to day testing of some aspect of the whole program.

If there is a bioweapon with similarities to Covid-19, and we get into a spat with China, then you and your surviving family will be lucky if quick designer vaccines i.e mRNA are available . Who knows? maybe the secret to the bioweapon is that it selectively favors certain ethnic groups.

At this point, it is speculation.
What country would benefit more from not having enough children to care for older adults who have no Social Security programs such as we have in the US? I believe there is one rather large country to the West of Taiwan that had a "one child" policy for decades to slash growth which was very successful but had the unintended consequences of parents aborting female children to have a male heir to care for them in their old age. Eliminating the need to care for their elderly parents would free up those middle aged workers to work harder.

You could also say the US and most of the developed World as a species benefited from a targeted bioweapon that takes out the unproductive... observations say the most deaths were those too old to work and too sick/obese/etc. to be highly productive even when young. Many complaints here about COVID having far more bad outcomes for people of color, but if you look at the data, those here are usually the ones with BMIs way above 30 or 35... with other comorbidities such as high BP, cholesterol, diabetes, etc...

IF the belief that the whole thing was a fraud and mRNA vaccine were meant to harm us rather than save us, then it will also be culling the easily fooled including you and I. Likewise, if it turns out the vaccines were meant to kill, it will eliminate a large percentage of the population who are considered intelligent, especially most of the MDs and Tech workers in the Silicon Valley. Maybe it was/is a bioweapon to dumb down the population? Or a weapon to remove those of us who are too arrogant for some? Who knows?

Was this the Monday session you attended at SXSW?

You'd hope that after 50 years of failed affirmative action programs from the university level to high tech recruiting (I recruited for HP at UC Berkeley for 9 or 10 years between 1978 and 1987) that you probably have to start at the preschool level to make STEM cool and an accepted way of helping their people rather than being targets for gangs.
