That's sort of... not just wrong... but missing the point. Look at "examples"... and, what history proves true... is that much depends on "circumstance"... Historically, that circumstance meant... man living in nature has risks and opportunities tied to the environment... and what culture allows, tolerates or requires... is largely a function of nature's largess... or the opposite. There's a reason that the culture of the Inuit is what it is... and their adaptations to their environment are what they are... including the culture... as an essential element of survival in that environment. But, look at the culture of Polynesian Islands... if maybe skipping over the human sacrifice issues in the South Pacific with a "Joe and the Volcano" treatment... to adopt more of a Disneyesque view of it as Moana vs Lilo and Stitch... in modern context of a more or less frivolous to condescending "PC" treatment ? A kernal of truth that when basic survival is not really the issue... because there's naturally enough to eat with little effort required to procure it... and when predators are not unchecked... when war with the neighbors trying to take your stuff is not a constant concern... ? Look at the Salish culture... before disease arrived and began to end it ? "Wealth" was deemed and judged in the ability to give it away... as makes sense when there is plenty... and it is mostly "organizing the group" to enable its optimal use that is "the source of wealth"... and, you can't store it, or "take it with you" ? Having plenty leads to... liberal politics... the undervaluation of the material... higher valuation given to "the rest" in our interactions... comity... that is not otherwise apparently essential to survival. Peace and prosperity are not the the natural outcome of plenty... but require political skill within it... to minimize conflict and use of force, when people have plenty of time and few disincentives to manufacture reasons for it ? The opposite... requiring recognition in the opposite... where greater discipline is required... as, in tribal cultures on the eastern side of the Cascades... the Cayuse, the Walla Walla... where life was not all that easy... but, with hard work, easily amenable to culture suited to the environment... And, those tribes were the wealthiest... the most envied... the most culturally stable... when the unit of currency in trade was... a horse... or beaver skins... ? That's even mirrored in microcosm today... as low interest rates / ZIRP... fosters "stakeholder capitalism"... where some few are made to feel oddly entitled to "share in ownership and control"... without any demands made that they share in the sacrifices and contributions to capital that others have made to enable the work being carried out ? Look for reasons that insanity of "the WEF" and its advocacy for "stakeholder capitalism" is suddenly in retreat... both as we see, first, its consequences in our tolerance of it or adoption... second, as ZIRP is banished... as it turns out we can't put clueless morons in charge of oil companies... and still have the oil flow... because... it doesn't just "do that" all by itself ? Link I posted yesterday on subject of ignorance... noted two monkeys... each given a grape... happy enough. But, one given a grape, the other a slice of cucumber... has one becomes enraged... as the imbalance and injustice in distribution of the entitlement is perceived ? Entitlement... its creation... and "management"... only an issue as long as there is a surplus sufficient that no one cares if we share. Still not preventing fights over the control of the "management" of the surplus enabled ? Why ? As soon as there's a shortage... or work that has to be done to enable sustained access... that culture fails... as did the Soviet Union... seeking to "blend" that cultural disconnect... with modernity... by forcibly industrializing... ? As the "WEF crew" is failing now ? The cultural disconnects... the result of which we all recognize in their presentation... as Soros is empowered in applying surplus to undermining the rule of law... are enabled by "surplus" paired with inept [ignorant] (or exploitive) leadership. The only place we "require" altruism [which Soros is incapable of] for success to be enabled and sustained... is in leadership... with "corruption" in it various forms (including either $ or power seeking) its opposite ? As "bad money chases out the good"... so too does bad leadership. But, the solution to the problems inherent in the cultural disconnect from the origin of value... IS NOT about "the material"... AT ALL... but about the source of value (or lack of it) resident inside the culture that enables (or not) acclimatization to... austere environments... or competition... etc. China can tolerate obvious mismanagement better than other cultures... because of the culture... not because of the inherent skills of the leaders ? But, that does not mean that China can sustain competition with others... only because the strength of the culture allows them to survive ignorant decision making ? Russians... can sustain the effort in converting young men into bodies consumed in the fire of war... because of the element of persistence in that being a part of the culture... even a point of pride ? "See how much we can take" ? Great. Good for you. So, its useful to understand the culture... and what that means is sustainable... but, then, it also requires knowing what the limits are... which that culture, and its method, also imposes ? And, of course, not acculturated, but fact... new realities in limits as "existential" concerns emerge... as culture is not keeping up with the pace of change... Western culture... because the locus in origin of innovations in technology, and business, banking, modern scientific thinking, and much resulting naval gazing... leading to industrialization... and social resistance to its best (monkey/grape/cucumber) and worst (sigh) outcomes... has redefined "the possible"... and with it, the "surplus"... that enables adoption of cultural error and excess. Others have, by now, adopted its utility (and overcome its expression in colonialism, etc.) in sufficient degree that I'm not preparing an argument on "the superiority" of western culture, rather than the opposite? The changes wrought are... obviously... not all well considered or beneficial... historically, or to date ? And, we've been through trials by fire in competition... often enough... to perhaps have learned lessons... that we appear mostly not to have the first clue about ? I've hammered it here often enough... What's the common thread in the cultural / ideological... that functions as distraction... and leads to error ? What are the boundaries... in cultural limits... or the lack of them... that define our modern predicament ? Capitalism... and Socialism... each offer... distractions, misdirection... corruption and exploits... but, no solutions ? WHY ?
