The resort we stayed in used "not Grade A" beans from local sources... and still made a far better cup than generally available to knowing consumers stateside back then. But, they'd figured out the "control" part of quality management, back then... but hadn't figured out the downstream... and weren't allowing beans to leave the island into the trade, back then... Readily enough available now... in theory... as production has grown... although they still say 97% of it is sold to Japan... as has always been true. But, as with other such things, "available" still leaves you dependent on the purveyor to be honest in labeling... and in my experience most all such still manages to reach consumers only after having been diluted. Kona used to be a decent cup, too... but, standards have slipped... diversification in varietals in beans not all good... and most that is sold now is either "intensively farmed"... or blended to 10% of the content... Buy it direct from the growers... still seems best. And you can do that now as estate direct from Kona or Blue Mountain brands... Through Covid... lost access to many good beans. Localized Ethiopian beans became scarce. Back now. But, I've not been able to get quality (or, real) product from Yemen in a long time... again not overly willing to trust the trade when it is on offer... My last few attempts, after placing orders for that listed... told... nope... sorry... Apparently, I'm not the only one who has been struggling with that problem... Today received samplers in the post from a new outfit in Seattle... Honest Mocha The only thing they sell are Yemeni beans... currently either one as a single estate... or a blend... roasted or green beans... shipped globally... I tend to trust they're "doing it right" as have such a narrow focus would be harder to survive if not... knowing why it is that discerning customers are coming to them... But... haven't tasted it yet... so... withhold judgement until proof.
