What is funny is beating buy and hold the markets means you get to feel stupid more often than smart. That is because while good stock picks are soaring and gaining popularity above their fundamentals, you are taking profits only to see the shares you hold soar. It is easier now because the cash generated is earning about 4.5% while waiting for a decent pullback and sometimes what I buy, like PFE on Friday under $43... pays a better dividend.

Likewise, you get to feel dumb buying back at a discount if the stock continues lower... even though I try to buy back shares in "installments" so I get some back if they do not drop much then get a lot more when they fall closer to their historical low or decline percentages... that is why I track those.

I get by feeling too stupid by keeping track of total value and cost basis but that only really helps feel smart when you have a cycle or two of buying shares back at lower prices and hopefully getting to sell them again for nice gains.

It sounds similar to how you use options... in that you don't have to be perfect while adding significant value over buy and hold.
