I got the first spam ever sent. I was so pissed... there was no name for it then, it was kind of shocking. Now it's nearly all spam. My e-mail addr went live in late 84 or early 85 and has never changed, although now it's just forwarded somewhere else. The pre-Internet that I was on for a while was Usenet, a bunch of universities linked together, UNIX commands could allow you to upload or download a file, you could get status of anybody in the world and even initiate a chat (talk) randomly based on their public file that would echo when you issued a 'finger' command. There was also ARPANET, which I may have touched on a couple times, also MILNET which I used a bit. Once I downloaded a disassembler from Europe at some relatively fast rate, 64 kilobits/sec? Whatever it was, I did some research and discovered the digital bandwidth between Europe and the US at that time was 4x was I was using, meaning for about a minute, I consumed 25% of the total bandwidth across the Atlantic. Anyway... I agree that the current crop of Cryptos will be replaced. The main thing is they contribute to water shortages and global warming. People are switching to EVs and now competing with crypto miners, as if mining actual minerals wasn't bad enough for the environment. It will be viewed as really crazy in historical retrospect, imo. Same as NFT. We had a lot of SunOS computers, the first one I remember was like 80 grand. Later, I had a desktop workstation that was 5-6k. In today's dollars, the former would be 200k and the latter about 15k.
