I recently had a heat pump recommended to me by a local friend and one of the good features was what you mentioned - uniform heat. The tax write-off was another, and the reduction in heating oil expense was the main thing. It was a big installation expense, so it'd take a few years to earn it back with savings in oil.

AC is not required here. Sunshine is a bonus. We call it "blue clouds".

We had a heat pump many years ago - back in the 60's. It was a big thing located outside the house. I recently checked it out on Google Earth and it's still there. I'd be amazed if it was the same unit. As I recall, it would heat or cool also. I was too young to pay attention to that stuff back then, but I remember my parents mentioning that the house was built by a contractor for his own use. Presumably, he had seen a lot of heating choices and picked the heat pump for himself.
