Hi Russell, Wasn't Trudeau the guy who was in that grainy black and white porno flick with Barbara Streisand?

Russell,

Pierre Elliot Trudeau , IMHO, was a leader and an
intellectual, a rare commodity IME.

Leadership is indeed a rare commodity among the current pack of politicians. It involves doing (and saying) what you believe is best for the country, not for the politician or his party or his financial supporters or his voting blocks. But that sort of thing implies some inherent belief systems and courage. Neither of those qualities has been rewarded by either the population or the media in recent years.

Hey Slick, this post has got your number.

>>Jack , actually my question is somewhat serious. First of all , I think the presidency is really only a front, Head salesman if you will, no pun intended, and no matter who is in there, the same things would basically transpire. Don't get me wrong, I love these threads on SI and all the very bright people who post, I feel I learn a lot . Of all the Prime Ministers we had here , Pierre Elliot Trudeau , IMHO, was a leader and an intellectual, a rare commodity IME.

You are essentially correct. The Prez, unless extraordinarily persuasive and politically potent can change the nation's course only a few degrees. The Constitution was set up that way. In a parliamentary system, the PM usually has far greater power to move his/her agenda and the country.

Also, in a parliamentary system like yours the PM is the head of government while in the U.S., the Prez is head of government and head of state.(Btw, is the Queen still your head of state, or did the Governor-General fire her when they modified the Articles of Confederation.) <g>

As for Trudeau, he's largely responsible for Canada's current competitive problems - he built the overweening state. In that sense he's much like NYC's Mayor Lindsay.

And then there was Trudeau's (ex)wife, Margaret. Like Slick, she liked to date while married - she just did it in public.
