Fugazi,

I asked Brian B. about future marketing plans for the c-6 and IDT in general. They understand that they have done a very poor job of communicating with the street but, they have now hired a PR firm and are fully aware of the need to be good at marketing.

I think they have improved in this area during the last 2-3 months.

When IDTI gets the C6, C6+ and any other future versions into high volume production, they will increasingly face the problem of marketing.

An issue is scale. Intel spends more on promoting the Pentium brand than IDT's entire sales -about $900 mil. per year in marketing & advertising including heafty promo dollars that are paid to distributors and retailers. AMD has (or had) a budget of over $300 million. I don't know what Cyrix/NSM spends but it is probably much less. How much advertising can IDT/Centaur afford? They have done print advertising in PC and electronics design magazines. I think the most effective way to promote the WinChip will be to take advantage of their sales force to get the parts tested and designed in to a large number of 2nd and third tier OEM applications - just as they are now doing. Once they have enough capacity to go after the more price agressive large OEM market then those accounts become a target.

We should continue this discussion maybe 4 or six months from now when IDTI has ramped up production and selling the parts becomes a bigger concern. In six months, a single OEM the size of Compaq, IBM or Toshiba could soak up any excess production IDTI is likely to have. Of course, a foundry relationship with IBM or other large fab could change that, but that will take months to get going and judging the impacts at this point is guesswork until the extent of any agreement are known.
