Andrew,
I have considered those same points.BUT...let me do a poor imitation of the Peter Lynch thing....I started with aol about 5 years ago but now use a direct internet provider..soon to switch to a cable modem.Yet I have kept aol for my girls. My 8th grader and her friends have created thier own system for conference calling. My daughter is in many activities and yet still pulls straight A's...so how can I refuse her this aol connection?I monitor and she and her friends have their little chats only among themselves. When she does research I help on my internet connection. It has become such a social thing in the last two years...like when my friend and I used to hang on the phone and watch Johnny Carson together!<VBG>It is still cheaper then taking the girls to one movie! This is like a cult thing and will not go away. I do not like aol's internet connection but I can change more easily (even at my age)than a pack of teenagers! This is not going away anytime soon as so many people have already made the "connection" and set up their e-mail and buddy lists.IMHO, this one has it's own energy source and cannot be analyzed like other businesses. So be careful if you short it.Look,I cannot believe it myself, but it is reality.Wish I had been more observant 4-5 years ago.
You best not look at aol the same as you would csco or t or whatever. There are too many intangibles and they know it!
Good luck.
Regards,
Barbara
