I agree with you.

I think the collapse began with 8PM games for "academic colleges that happened to have Division I football teams."

One of my best experiences at CAL was going to the football games and sitting with friends in the student section and cheering our team. Yeah, quite often we were a bit tipsy by 1PM... but I imagine many intoxicated students won't be able to walk to the games for an 8PM start time, much less find the stadiums after a full day of drinking, smoking, vaping or whatever is in these days.

I think during Stanford's last great run it all changed and the schools chased the money. CAL and Stanford have great rivalries in many low-key sports that may go away if they are forced to travel to the East Coast such that students won't participate in the sports instead preferring to concentrate on why they are there, get a fantastic education.

Maybe they can make an academic league and entice ND, UC Davis, UCSD, SJ State and a few others to join like Gonzaga and Lyola Marymount in Moraga then get back to traditional football times geared towards the student athletes.
