I grew up next door to a cop (actually there were two on our street). This guy was an unknown hero. He'd disarmed two armed criminals in his time. Once when he was on foot chasing a robber and came face to face with him with both telling the other to give up their sidearm. Once outside of town where a drunk migrant farm worker was threatening people with a gun. Just like the first example, he walked up and talked the guy into handing over his weapon. I know police are taught to never this nowadays. They should empty pistols into the guy.

But Bob Smitty was a hero and he saved lives without leaving a trail of bodies behind him.
