"Slowing from 80 to 70 on the freeway"

If there's no traffic between here and town, I go 45, instead of 55. Once in a while, I make it all the way.

Doren,
Slowing from 80 to 70 on the freeway is a significant sacrifice to our spoiled society
Speed limit is already no higher than 70 in California.

Back when the federal speed limit was 55, a study was done that showed little to no savings on fuel consumption:

*******
National Maximum Speed Law - Wikipedia

In 1998, the Transportation Research Board footnoted an estimate that the NMSL reduced fuel consumption by 0.2 to 1.0 percent.[30]
