A device that sends and receives data. Often they are interfaces that convert electrons to photons and back to connect data center CPUs with fiber optics. The generic term can be used for any format that boosts power of the signal to go further than a few cm on a PC board.

For example, my last years at HP were making transceivers that used infrared to connect devices in close proximity (1 meter or less) because Bluetooth was a decade away needing Moore's law to scale enough to make it affordable.
