Yes, I believe the ancient Egyptians used icons and that was all right for the ancient Egyptians. They didn't rent cars, and I doubt that their chariots had headlights or such.

I find it a major safety hazard, surpassing even the whimsical placement of door handles and seat belt mechanisms, to have icons in place of simple English words on a car's dashboard to identify what does what. The same can be said for road signs.

I hope this does not make me seem xenophobic, because I'm not, but doggone it, these things should be universal and easily identified. <end of rant>

BTW, I agree with you about memory-evoking stimuli and find it a fascinating subject.
