>>Perhaps time to spec out a double CPU NT box...<<

Just got back from FRY's (a rather large computer/electronics retail outlet.)

Win NT....I read the box, one item was that if you are into multitasking NT will provide a benefit as it specifically allocates memory for each task resulting in a more stable system..I am paraphrasing.

MOTHERBOARDS

I have noted on a few web sites comments about the need for large capacitors on a motherboard. Apparently they dry out over time so they should be of high quality if you want them to last. One item Anand mentioned in his review of the ABIT LX6 was the small capacitors.

I am no expert but I can recognize capacitors. I sauntered over to the motherboard rack to take a look. Most boards (they do not stock ABIT) had small capacitors. I noted that the TYAN board's capacitors were much larger than the other boards. I would say about four times bigger! Then I noted a board with capacitors about 25 percent bigger than the TYAN capacitors! The board also had a quality look about it (as did the TYAN)...I looked up and noted the manufacturer and model
....INTEL AL440LXG....

I have started researching the board. INTEL also makes the DK44OLX dual processor board. It is more appealing to me as it has better expansion capability..more exp slots and 4 DIMM slots. It has onboard SCSI, sound and network. It is available at ESC technologies so it can be purchased in a bare bones pre-tested system. Intel's warranty on the board is three years.

The dual board is "extended" ATX form factor. The dimensions are larger than standard ATX. I am trying to find out what case it will fit in.

My current thinking is to load Win95 OSR2 first. Then load NT in a dual boot mode.

Even though it is a dual processor board my intent would be to use one CPU. I like to play with large graphics files that can use all the RAM I can throw at them.

My first thought is that one PII 333 would be faster than two PII
266's.

Message:

I Want to change from Win95 OSR2 to Windows NT 4 Workstation because I think it is a more stable OS. I mean I have enough Win95 crashes , Bugs etc. : My questions is

1) Will it be better for my Overclocked 200MMX to 290MMX (under Win95 runs only 250MHz) ?

2) Will my games like Quake2, Blood, Close Combat2 & etc. run like it was ?

3) Must I change my partition from FAT32 to NTFS ?

4) Is NT Workstation Overall Faster in Application like Photoshop 4, Corel Draw, Word, Excel ??

5) Will it Run DOS app. as well ???

Thank You in advance !!!

1. I don't know about overclocking stability, however the kernel IS MUCH more stable than Winblows 95 (still can't touch Linux though 8}....), so I would ASSUME that YES would be the answer to that question.

2. Quake 2 is fast under Windows NT4.0. However, any D3D games will not work at all (in D3D mode). And some Games that rely heavily on DX5
will experience problems as well. In General NT4 is not considered to be the Gaming Platform of choice, however Microsoft is currently patching NT4 to be DX5 compatible, and it is slowly becoming more and more so. Maybe in not too long it will support D3D.

3. Microsoft has a patch out now (the name escapes me at the moment) that allows NT4 to access 32 bit FAT. Now whether this allows you to load NT onto a FAT32 partition I couldn't say..(my guess would be "NO"). My recommendation as far as FAT 32 goes is "DITCH IT!". FAT 32 is considerably slower, and has been known to cause problems with certain applications, also data loss and HardDisk problems can become a hairier situation with FAT32. In general FAT16 is faster and more stable. FAT 32 allows for more efficient disk usage (greater formatted capacity) and allows you to use larger than 2.1GB partitions. I would recommend that if you have a HD larger than 2GB that you partition it into 2GB or smaller partitions, and use FAT16. Trust me.

3. NT is definitely faster for Multimedia applications in general (video, image, sound mastering). And most Higher End apps are ported for NT first.

4. NT will run any DOS app without complication.

*** This is my REAL advice tho....Ditch the Microsoft theme. You can
download Linux Slackware(and others)for free. Right now I'm running Triple boot. NT4.0, Plug & PLay Linux, and Windows 98. Windows 98 is purely a gaming platform for me. I run anyhting else I can from Linux, and any serious apps I can't run in Linux, I use NT for. Linux(UNIX) is HANDS DOWN the MOST stable and fastest operating system on the planet. Linux has NEVER hard crashed on me (X Windows has locked up a couple of times but i press ctrl+alt+backspace and it's up again in less than a second!!) I do alot of 3D design and Audio Video mastering, and I get about 20% increase in performance in these apps under Linux (over the Microsoft alternatives). The main problem with Linux is hardware and software support. There are a decent amount of Higher End apps for Linux (UNIX), if you got the dough, but there is a lack of mainstream support. Quake 2 runs AWESOME!!! in Linux, but you have to have a VOODOO card to use OGL. However Linux is exploding right now, and the User base is increasing exponentially (as people get more and more fed up with the Microsoft conspiracy) and support will increase quickly as time goes on.<<<<
