Bill, In Uruguay, there is more need for air conditioners than heaters. Only in June and July does it get cold enough to require heat.

And yet I don't see any statistics on Uruguay's usage of A/C, or heat pumps for that matter.

Burning wood to warm homes reminds me Korea in the 70's and 80's:

As Korea transformed into a 1st world economy, powered by fossil fuels like coal, the trees grew back, and I could hardly recognize the landscape when I returned in the early 2000's.
Remember that Korea also has to import 100% of its oil. (I'm not sure how much coal Korea has to import, but it's definitely NOT coming from the coal-rich North.)
