RE: Quadruple Edged Sword?

>> And what does this do for Jazz [sic] sales? <<

If the battle was over price, I would be more worried about Orb than about SparQ. It's not. Marketing and profitability is the key to success in this (and just about any) business. Iomega has a good handle on both of the key aspect.

>> Don't forget the person who got Syquest in such deep trouble is the president of Orb. <<

I think it's SyQuest who got SyQuest in such deep trouble. I've seen no changes since their CEO was ousted.

>> Tape drives sales are declining which should hurt Iomega's other products. <<

Tape drive sales are declining BECAUSE of Iomega's other products. Just ask anyone else who sells tape drives. Iomega recognized this about a year ago and began moving resources out of Ditto and into Clik.

How are you able to follow the Sony story? Is there somewhere on the web they're talking about the Sony drive?

Thanks - Emory

>>And what does this do for Jazz sales? The orb is produced by a more unproven company than Syquest. Don't forget the person who got Syquest in such deep trouble is the president of Orb. Not a very good track record.

I still think Jazz drives and cartridges are more susceptible to the increasing competition than Zip. And don't forget Sony will be coming out with a competing product to the Zip. Tape drives sales are declining which should hurt Iomega's other products.<<

Stephen -

My opinion is that SyQuest should be as worried about Orb as Iomega should be about HiFD. Namely, not much. There is still no proof that Castlewood can even ship Orb, much less in quantity. Nor is there proof that Sony can ship HiFD. (Obviously, if Sony can ship HiFD at all, they'll be able to do it in quantity.)

But as far as I know, neither company has demonstrated a fully functional prototype. That puts them both pretty far away from shipping.
