Yes they were. And Democrats were the party supporting slavery and the Klan. But all of those were a long time ago and don't reflect the ideals of either party anymore. I can't imagine the party of Trump supporting civil rights. Just the opposite.

Yes, in 1860 when the Republican party was composed of northern liberal free states and the Democratic party composed of Southern slave states. That reversed around the turn of the last century and to NOT recognize that, and that it has always been the liberals who were on the right side of history and the conservatives on the wrong side is dishonest!! And the conservatives always try to claim credit for what the liberals do because just like now they have always been full of shit. The best example is their CLAIMING they are the party of Lincoln. He is turning in his graves hearing that crap! < was conservatives that voted against the 1964 civil rights act! And the Republican party by and large has been the party of the rich and conservatives for 100 years. But as you know, Republicans were once the party of civil rights.
