Hi Tom, this should be a good one! Tuesday February 17, 12:34 pm Eastern Time Company Press Release SOURCE: DSC Communications Corporation DSC Enters Framework Agreement With Great Dragon Telecom To Market And Sell GSM Systems In China Companies to Conduct Network Trial with Unicom DALLAS, Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- DSC Communications Corporation (Nasdaq: DIGI - news) announced today that the company has entered into a framework agreement of cooperation with Great Dragon Telecommunications of China (GDT). Under the agreement the companies will market and sell GSM systems in the low- subscriber density markets in China. Celcore, DSC's cellular infrastructure division, and GDT will jointly develop market specific requirements for the system, known as GDC/GS2000. The GDC/GS2000 is based on DSC's GlobalSwitch(R) design and the companies will work together to obtain Type Approval. In addition, DSC and GDT have entered into an agreement with Unicom (China United Telecommunications) to conduct a network trial of the system. GDT is a group corporation consisting of eight large-scale, state-owned enterprises. Its service networks and marketing centers are located throughout China. GDT is China's largest domestic switching manufacturer with over 6,000 switching systems, handling over 12 million subscriber lines, in China's Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). The framework agreement marks both DSC's and GDT's entry into the GSM market in China. ''The GDC/GS2000 is well suited for the Chinese market, where there is a tremendous demand for telecommunications service from low-subscriber density markets in the vast rural areas,'' said Dr. Wu Jiangxing, chairman of the Board of Directors of GDT. ''By partnering with DSC we will be able to offer a competitive GSM solution throughout our country,'' he added. Tom Berger, vice president, DSC cellular infrastructure division, said, ''We are delighted to be working with GDT to enter the most dynamic GSM market in the world. This partnership, based on cooperative efforts and the network trial with Unicom, further demonstrates the market acceptance of DSC's innovative GSM technology for low-subscriber density applications.'' China Unicom was established jointly by eight Chinese ministries and departments, including the Ministry of Electronics, Ministry of the Electric Power Industry and Ministry of Railways. Additional shareholders include several Chinese and foreign companies. Unicom is the second largest telecommunications operator in China with GSM services covering more than 100 large and medium-sized cities. DSC's GSM system is designed specifically for urban, suburban and rural markets with low-subscriber density. It is comprised of the GlobalSwitch, GlobalCell(R) base station, and Network Management System (NMS). The GlobalSwitch integrates standard GSM network elements into a single cabinet, making it easy to transport, install, maintain and operate with much lower start up and operating costs compared to traditional systems. The GlobalSwitch is scaleable from a few hundred subscribers up to 10,000 subscribers. Multiple GlobalSwitches can be networked together to provide higher capacity. The system can be deployed either in new markets or as an expansion of existing networks. According to China's Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, the country had over 13 million mobile users at the end of 1997, making it the third largest mobile market in the world. Industry analysts forecast China will become the largest GSM market in the world by 2002, with an estimated 40 million GSM users(A). The GlobalSwitch and GlobalCell products will be on display February 17-19 at the GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, at stand number G3. Celcore is a division of DSC Communications Corporation.
