Trish, I need your help. In Jan TEK's PR piece talked about new hardware to be unveiled at NAB 98. The part that caught my eye was,

" In support of this stepand the longer-term migration strategyTektronix will introduce three new Grass Valley HDTV products at NAB 98: a master control switcher, a small production switcher, and a family of HDTV routers. These products will be based on existing platforms, offering familiar formats and compatibility with current Grass Valley systems."

Could this new hardware be FC based, or is it old legacy type stuff. Thanks in advance.

Trish,

No problem with the techno-babble. As others will tell you, most of us ANCR long-timers know FAR MORE about the technology than about picking buy and sell points. <g>

Your comments about Tek's suggestion to buy BOTH a Fibre Channel hub and Ethernet switch is interesting. I've been pushing Ancor for a long time to bring a high-performance Ethernet to Fibre Channel gateway product to market sooner, rather than later. This would seem to be another indication that this sort of product might have some market appeal. I would actually like to see some Ethernet switching built right into the MKII, but I don't know how practical that is.

As far as latency and overhead of a Fibre Channel switch, perhaps Tek should take a look at the MKII and Class 1. <g>
