John,

Here's the link to a post on the Yahoo CREAF thread that cites reference to a DIMD survey on demand for a 12MB Voodoo card:

messages.yahoo.com@m2.yahoo.com

I'm still learning how this biz works. But if all these 3D game enthusiasts are going to cancel their orders for the DIMD 8MB card in favor of the CREAF 12MB card in order to meet ANTICIPATED demand of 3D games YET TO BE RELEASED, then it may be prudent, at a minimum, for DIMD to merely ANNOUNCE (they're real good at this) plans to release a 12MB card in the near future.

I believe a DIMD announcement on a 12MB card will have a chilling effect on the switch to the CREAF card. Such an announcement would take the wind out of CREAF's sails, and return the favor to CREAF, which has done similar to DIMD by going with a 12MB card before the release of any games requiring 12MB.

These 2 companies appear to be at cut-throat competition in an attempt to capture the accolades of the 3D market for the most "kick-ass" card on the market. IMHO, CREAF is playing "come from behind," & is resorting to what might be labeled as "desperate" tactics in attempt to steal DIMD's thunder on the Voodoo chip set. The ball is now in DIMD's court. Let's see how it responds.

My own experience with purchasing computer technology has taught me that if I don't immediately need, or can put to use, the upgrade options offered in the product, don't get it. Why? Because when I need it, or when I will put it to use, I can get it cheaper, or something better will then be available.

So the question is, how many of these gamers think like I do? I can either buy a 8MB now, save myself $100 (CREAF pricing), & wait til' the games I purchase demand the additional 4MB. How long will this be? If its less than 6 months down the road, then DIMD ought to release one before then, & announce it plans to do so now. If it is as much as a year or so away, then I'd go with the 8MB card, & buy a cheaper or better 12MB card at the time I could immediately utitlize it.

Where does it say that people are cancelling their pre-orders? I find it hard to believe any true gamers would want to pre-order a graphic card from CREAF, since there haven't been any reviews yet, and the company already has a poor reputation in the business. It is impossible to know whether or not 12 megs is worth the extra money. Also, February 20 is only two days away, and CREAF hasn't even specified what software will be packaged with their product, not a good sign.
