Datek: New Classic is an obvious oxymoron. If it was optional it would be funny.

Coca-cola went thru this not long ago. I (and Santayana) suggest you (Datek) learn from history rather than force your formerly loyal customers to suffer through your re-inventing the wheel. And a perfectly good wheel at that.

Coke ended up keeping the true classic available. They painted the can slightly differently --- but they didn't muck with the formula. But it took Coke a long period of bad PR to "get" it. In Datek's case the formula is small size - fast xfer. If you must muck with the old interface, make it better from a speed/efficiency point of view: less bytes not more. This probably means only 1 link to the news/chart/noise sites - like it USED to be.

I've seen a lot of text on this thread about what we as customers want to see from Datek. I've seen a lot of queries about Level II, and options. I don't remember seeing many about mutual funds. So why is mutual funds the first new feature we see? Is Datek salivating for the piece of the Mutual fund fees that accrue to the broker? Must we conclude that Greed won out?

As Datek considers Level II, try to remember that Java is an unstable pig as in resource intensive. The old interface was simple and reliable. The more a Level II offering resembles the simplicity and reliability of the old interface, the better it will be received by the target audience. Traders won't care about splitting shapes of purple (violet? chartruce?) for the best ambiance. Traders will care about speed, reliability and accuracy. Web Street went for a slick-looking interface and sacrificed credibility. Please don't go there.

If you make the resolution of 800 X 600 or higher in your Windows setup you will be able to see more then 10 lines of quotes without klicking the mouse. And Datek does not need to make any modifications to support it.
