Zoran's press release states that the bill of materials is $30. It is not clear whether this includes the PC card and connectors, which are needed for both CUBE and ZRAN for comparison purposes. At any rate, this materials cost will result in product selling prices that are not that different and well under $100. Picture/sound quality, features, and performance will be deciding factors in the success of these cards. Not to mention OEM relationships, which may be even more important.

Tiernan Introduces Five New Cutting-Edge Products for MPEG-2 Digital
TV Applications

Solves Many of the Digital Compression Problems Faced by Broadcasters, Cable Companies and Common Carriers

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Tiernan Communications Inc., one of the
world's foremost designers and manufacturers of MPEG-2 digital television
compression equipment and systems, has recently introduced five innovative new
products. This coming on the heels of the seven new Tiernan products
introduced in April at NAB, brings to twelve the new MPEG-2 solutions this
company has launched in 1998.
With one new product being brought to market approximately every month,
Tiernan now has the world's most comprehensive line of such equipment. Each
is the result of extensive research and development and Tiernan's unique
application of digital signal processing technologies.

The five newest products include:
Tiernan TE6 high performance MPEG-2 encoder for professional television
broadcast applications requiring compression to the 4:2:2 Studio Profile @
Main Level and 4:2:0 Main Profile @ Main Level according to the MPEG-2
standard (ISO/IEC 13818-2). The 4:2:2 Studio Profile provides superior
quality images at data rates up to 50 Mbps. The encoder multiplexes
compressed video, audio, and data channels into a single DVB compliant
transport stream.
Tiernan TDR600 MPEG-2/DVB integrated receiver/decoder (IRD) for broadcast
grade applications requiring MPEG-2, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0. The TDR600 provides
both digital and analog output of video and audio signals. This IRD also
provides two high-speed user data channels up to 4,096 Mbps and can be
remotely controlled through RS-232 or Ethernet communications.
Tiernan TDR77, MPEG-2/DVB Integrated Receiver Decoder is a mid-range
product suited to 4:2:0 broadcast and professional applications requiring only
analog video and audio outputs, with support for teletext and user data
services. TDR77 is suitable for both SCPC and MCPC applications, and decodes
video at programmable transport rates from 2 to 60 Mbps.
Tiernan TUI10 Universal Network interface provides new and greatly
increased flexibility in "digital turnaround" of satellite and terrestrial
links. It converts any RS-422, ASI, G.703 (E2, E3 and DS3) input and provides
an output signal in any of the supported input formats. Typical application
of the TUI1O is the connection of two MPEG-2 devices -- satellite or
terrestrial -- that do not use the same physical interface.
Tiernan TMOD1000 is a compact QPSK/DVB modulator option that can be fitted
into Tiernan encoders. This provides an efficient 2U encoder/modulator
package which is the smallest, lightest, most rugged and lowest cost in the
industry. It is ideal for compact digital satellite news gathering
applications and provides a 70 MHz IF output which can be supplied to a
Satellite Frequency Upconverter.
In addition to these five recently released products, Tiernan
Communications Inc. provides a full line of digital television compression and
transmission equipment used worldwide by broadcasters, common carriers and
business television users. The company's products are essential in digital
television operations, satellite news gathering, and in the distribution of
television programming via satellite and terrestrial networks.
Tiernan products meet or exceed international standards of quality. More
than 500 Tiernan digital television systems are presently operating in some
25 countries.

If you read the Zoran news, it says chip priced UNDER $30. Sounds like Cube and Zoran are priced about the same FWIW.

Zoran Signs New Licensing Agreements

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Reuters) - Zoran said it has licensed its digital video disc (DVD) decoding technology, called SoftDVD, to 10 makers of computer-related products.

In a statement, Zoran said the companies are in the process of integrating the technology into their future graphics accelerator products for personal computers.

Financial details of the agreements were undisclosed.

SoftDVD is already being used by leading personal computer makers including Compaq Computer and Hewlett-Packard. Some of the new licensees include IXMICRO and ATI Technologies.

Separately, Zoran unveiled a new design to add DVD capabilities to Intel's new Intel740 graphics chip for less than $30.
