Trump's team essentially turned on him during his last term in office. Gary Cohen , Barr, his AG, to name a few. And his VP, of course.

Trump is not a professional politician. Yes, he was an independent. That contributed to his success and downfall.

As for abortion, Trump had no choice, but to take a hard line or else he would have not received any support from the RNC. The RNC and DNC tells the candidates what positions they must endorse.

RNC serves the evangelicals who live primarily in the South, Southwest and parts of the Midwest. These votets are primarily one issue voters.

Trump has privately mocked the evangelicals, but he has to cow tow to them.

I know for a fact that Trump is not personally pro life. He is neutral, doesn't care one way or the other.
