Top Clinton Aide at Federal Courthouse

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Deputy White House Counsel Bruce Lindsey, arguably President Clinton's
closest aide, arrived at the U.S. courthouse Wednesday where a grand jury has been hearing evidence
about the Clinton-Monica Lewinsky assertions.

Lindsey, who had been subpoenaed to testify, told reporters as he entered the building that he probably
would not make a statement after he finishes.

Lindsey was accompanied by his private lawyers.

The White House has told independent counsel Kenneth Starr's office that it may assert executive
privilege to prevent Lindsey from having to testify about any conversations he had with Clinton.

But prosecutors still may want to question Lindsey before the grand jury about conversations he had last
year with former White House aide and Lewinsky confidant Linda Tripp.

Tripp, whose taped conversations with Lewinsky are at the heart of the sex-and-perjury allegations, went
to Lindsey after reporters began asking about a 1993 incident in which Tripp allegedly saw White House
volunteer Kathleen Willey near the Oval Office with her blouse untucked and her makeup smeared.

Prosecutors also may want to question Lindsey about alleged "talking points" that Lewinsky gave Tripp
last month directing her to alter her account about Willey. Lindsey has denied any involvement in the
talking points. Clinton has denied having an affair with Lewinsky or asking her to lie about it.
