They don't go by anecdotal evidence, their members report. They go by large statistical evidence. Toyotas (#3) are well known to be problem free, ask any mechanic. But they require regular maintenance, oil changes etc. I've got a friend who bought & sold old cars for fun all his life, he can tell you the make, model, and year of almost any old car, he surprised me because he drives a Buick (#2).

I trust CR over anyone. I have all their Used Car Buyer Guides, THE best problem reference. Its spot on. I'd never buy a car without consulting them.

Land Rovers were the most expensive... well known shop dogs among mechanics.
