Upon reflection, when I did not know the candidates, either b/c I was too young and ignorant or b/c they had too little history. I liked Obama in his first year and I liked Trump in his first year. Or rather I gave both the benefit of the doubt, which shows you how I'm still too much of an optimist...I also liked Reagan and Clinton in their first terms (those 2 actually made it through the whole term with my support). Bush Sr. was also ok. I can't say that I "liked" him, but I found him competent and thoughtful.

I think we all have to come to terms that any candidate is going to be imperfect. What I don't like like that the system makes it so much worse. If it were up to me these would be the changes I'd make to the system:

#1 Nobody over 70 with with less than 10 years of public service can be elected.
#2 If you voted for deficit spending and that money is still not being returned, you are ineligible for reelection.
#3 No corporate or union donations. No Soros. No Koch Bros. No vote buying by anyone.
#4 You can't work for a lobby firm or get a cushy industry "consulting" job for 5 years after you leave the office.
#5 If you vote for war - and I don't care if you call it a war or a military operation or whatever BS name - then you need to have skin in the game. Someone from your family will be drafted. If you don't think it is important enough to send one of your family members to war, then you should not ask others to go either.

Do these 4, and I can live with almost anyone in the office.
