02/18/98 Potential PCS licensees in Mexico are being urged to deploy GSM technology. At Expocomm Mexico, representatives from the North American GSM Alliance, a consortium of North American wireless providers using GSM technology, urged potential bidders for PCS licenses in Mexico to consider deploying the digital technology in networks there. Members of the Alliance include Aerial Communication, Bell South Mobility DSC, Pacific Bell Mobile Services, Microcell Telecommunications, Omnipoint Communications, Powertel and Western Wireless.

MEXICO CITY, MEXICO, Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998 - The North American GSM Alliance, a consortium of the seven largest North American wireless providers using Global System for Mobile communications (GSM), has urged potential bidders for PCS licenses in Mexico to consider deploying the world 's leading digital technology of choice.

Speaking recently both at a press conference and at Expocomm Mexico in Mexico City, GSM Alliance Representative Michael T. Houghton provided an overview of GSM in North America and outlined reasons why the technology would benefit Mexico and its new PCS licensees.

"GSM is not only the right choice, it's the smart choice for Mexico, the Americas and the world," Houghton said. "GSM is a proven, established technology with a track record of success. Manufacturing efficiencies and economies of scale make this technology a robust, cost effective investment for PCS operators in Central and South America."

Houghton said that GSM's open, evolving standard accounts for nearly 40 percent of the world's total market for wireless services. Since GSM's interfaces are "open", equipment from multiple vendors can co-exist in the same network. This provides Mexican and other Latin American PCS operators with the option to purchase equipment from multiple suppliers.

"The versatility and advanced feature functionality of GSM also allows operators to be extremely creative and diverse with their marketing strategies and service offerings" explained Houghton. "As a result, GSM customers have more minutes of use than do the traditional cellular phone user."

Houghton said that speed to market, superior call privacy and fraud prevention, and roaming access to more than 110 countries around the world are significant GSM advantages for operators both "north and south of the border."

Companies affiliated with the GSM Alliance currently serve more than 1 million customers and operate networks covering more than 130 million people in the U.S. and Canada. Members of the Alliance include Aerial Communication, Bell South Mobility DSC, Pacific Bell Mobile Services, Microcell Telecommunications, Omnipoint Communications, Powertel and Western Wireless. The Alliance works in cooperation with North American GSM equipment manufacturers: Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, Nortel and Siemens.

John Paul, it's not struggling in growth, obviously. It's struggling to manage its worldwide CDMA problem -- Korean demand, conversion from GSM to CDMA, disputes over WCDMA intellectual property, etc. That's all I meant. It is struggling. If it weren't, the stock would be a lot higher than 47. Just to let you all in on a possibility no one wants to discuss, it may even lose this battle.

This is a very touchy thread. If I or anyone else say something that goes against the party line that "QCOM is awesome; it is a great near-term, medium-term and long-term buy." they get very emotional responses.

The $100 million Lucent fund is clearly not appropriate for a company with revenues of $3.8 billion.

Well, for starters, growth in per share market value; seeing that the stock price is approximately at the same place it was during the beginning year of your range. Just a thought. ; )

(I "knew" I should have bought more LU!!! Also, an interesting wire story this morning involving QCOM, ATI, LU and COMS. Sorry, I don't have the link handy.)

I just received a a very nice job offer from QCOM. What would be the would be the good points and bad points about working for this company? How about living in San Diego? Doesn't sound like a hard decision for me.
