dan, the most important differences are, -you can have 4 monitors with only one pci slot using the J3 -J3 has 3D support if you look into the details you can find: 1. graphic chip J2 is based on Cirrus Logic Laguna 5462 J3 is based on Cirrus Logic Laguna 5465 3D whats the difference between 5465 & 62, here is what Cirrus says about it: The CL-GD5464 and CL-GD5465 offer 3D-graphics capability in addition to maintaining the same high level of 2D performance offered by the CL-GD5462. (http://www.cirrus.com/products/overviews/gd546x.html) if you gain something from the 3D support depends on your applications. the '2d performance' may be the same for both chips, but, the 5465 has the faster RamDac: 230Mhz vs 170MHZ , 5465 vs 5462. you can get higher resolution/refresh rates for the J3. e.g. a 1600x1200 resolution with 60Hz and 65k color (16bit). or in other words, you'll probably get a clearer picture with the J3 card at 1280x1024 and 85hz compared to J2 for the same settings (of course you'll need an appropriate monitor) 2. video memory J2 and J3 have RDRam (Rambus technology) 500MB per second, both chips make use of only one channel. 3. on board bus both cards are 64 bit cards 4. bus both cards are PCI cards (including a PCI bridge); for J2 you can get a bridgeless version, this is important if you have an old bios before 6/95 or so(for details look here: appiantech.com 5. number of ports (monitors) j2: 2 ports j3: 2 ports + optional daughter card you can put more than one appian cards into your system to increase the number of ports(monitors). however, J2 and J3 are not compatible. so, you cant start with a J2 and then add a j3 card later 6. pricing/availabitlity there is posting from 'ira player' : Message 3409432 and an appian press release (nov 17, 1997)biz.yahoo.com : Pricing and Availability The Jeronimo J3 including the HydraVision software is available in the following configurations: -- $690 - 4MB of RDRAM -- $840 - 8MB of RDRAM -- $990 - three-port configuration -- $1140 - four-port configuration
