Datek:

I've never used them, but seem to recall AlienTech did (maybe not him, but someone who used to post here previously) and they did not speak highly of it. E*Trade and Ameritrade take their sweet time posting results although their executions are fairly fast. ESchwab is the flat out fastest responsive, but at almost $30 a trade not very cost competitive.

I opened an account with Datek but haven't used them. I like Dreyfus brokerage Service. (www.tadepbs.com) formally Pacific Brokerage.

I have been using Datek for over a year and have been satisfied with their service. Orders have always been executed efficiently. The latest move to the new web site has been frustrating. There have been times when I can't get in or it has been slow to access, but they have are working through their problems. I still like the old server best, but it could be due to familiarity. I have accounts with NDB and E-trade and closed one with Lombard. I prefer Datek to all of them. Faster transactions and confirmations and free real time quotes. Of course there are many that I haven't tried and this is certainly a growth area so I am always looking for improvements. I tried to open an account with Suretrade just to give them a try but they screwed up the application paperwork so I just dropped that idea. Good luck.

Check out the Datek thread

Subject 5957

I haven't been there for quite a while. I should visit it myself again.

I've used Datek for about a year. Worthless for daytrading, reacting to short term moves in the market. They are getting better, but their servers are not reliable, especially at critical moments (market open and close) for either quotes or executions. I've had 10% gains turned into 10% losses because my browser connections were repeatedly refused for several minutes at end of day, start of day. October was a total disaster. If you call them, it's hit or miss finding someone who is knowledgeable, and can really help you. If you email them, you might get a response in a month, and they will have pretty much overlooked what you wrote to them in the first place and ask you to tell them all over again. You have a better chance of getting their attention here on SI. That's a shame.

What is sad is that they may be the best in this new business for the type of service they are. (I'm excluding true real time, continuous, data feed services, and direct to market execution services.) It really depends on how you intend to use them. Probably just fine for entering limit orders for stocks you have researched and want to get into and out of positions at your price, but if you're thinking in terms of real time action, I would look elsewhere.

*OT*
Hi all!

I tried to issue a sell stop today with through my Olde broker on a NASDAQ stock. My broker assured me it is not possible to issue such an order with a NASDAQ stock, only NYSE. That is not my understanding. (A lot based on following and corresponding with people on this thread.)

Do some brokers not handle all types of transactions? Or is my broker misinformed? Am I misinformed?

I'd appreciate any insights on this.

Tony
