I believe Paxlovid was first recommended to be taken within the first few days of symptoms and/or testing positive for COVID. After that, I think it loses effectiveness as the virus has already done its thing.

PAXLOVID should be started within 5 days of your first symptoms, so talk to your healthcare professional as soon as possible.

I was getting better a day after testing positive with first symptoms but felt the data was decent enough to take Paxlovid to lower the odds of hospitalization. Several good friends had similar, good results with Paxlovid.

I don't think people expected it to be used for "Long COVID" weeks after first symptoms, but it couldn't hurt to test and make sure (probably because we really don't know what causes Long COVID other than getting COVID in the first place.)

My understanding of the theory is IF you survive COVID, then your body already has antivirals that will protect you from reinfection for a while. IF your body can't generate the proper, natural antivirals, then your COVID can progress to a severe case and perhaps hospitalization. IF you still have some COVID virus in nasal passages after taking Paxlovid, for example, when you stop your course of Paxlovid, then you can reinfect yourself because your body didn't manufacture enough natural immunity to completely clear it so you get a mild case until your body does clear it. I believe I had a mild bump of symptoms for a few days after I finished my course but it didn't slow me down
