I am not sure about how much currency you can carry out of US. But there is no limitation on amount you carry into US. However, if you carry enough currency into US (10K probably as you said), you have to declare it at custom.

AV Opines Jeff-I could be wrong but I thought the US Gov't or Customs does not allow more than $10K currency to leave or come into the country. It is a figure close to that. Well, you can carry as much cash as you wish in and out of the country. By law, you have to declare to custom if the "CASH" amount exceeds 10K.
