PALO ALTO, CALIF. (Dow Jones)--Overseas markets still represent the biggest opportunity for growth of personal computer sales despite the financial crisis in Southeast Asia, Intel Corp. (INTC) chief operating officer Craig Barrett said. Speaking to the Churchill Club, Barrett said that within a couple of years a third of Intel's sales could come from Asia Pacific, a third from Europe, and a third from the U.S. Presently, Intel gets about 45% of its sales from the U.S. and about 30% from Europe. Asia Pacific sales make up about 25% of the total. Barrett said he foresees a day soon when China passes Germany as the third largest national personal computer market for Intel, trailing only the U.S. and Japan. He also said Intel continues to cooperate with the federal trade commission's probe into Intel's business. The FTC's request for documents has focused on Intel's microprocessor business, and the company has been turning over the requested pages, he said. Barrett added that Intel will selectively pursue opportunities in the market for inexpensive processors used in consumer electronics.
