You got my tone right. While I do believe that what HGS is doing falls within the letter of the patent laws, it seems that it is outside the intent of those laws. How can something be patentable that is just fed out of a machine with no clues as to its real function? It is circular reasoning to say that a piece of the human genome is useful by virtue of the fact that it is a piece of the human genome. Nevertheless, I think they are going to get away with it. While I believe that it is a travesty that they will be able to get extortion money from the developers of the real therapeutic drugs, I have bought a wad of shares in HGS, and sunk some of my kids' education money in it as well.
