I appreciate your participation on this thread and hope you can ignore the personal insults. They have no place here but unfortunately are a fact of life on the internet.

As for the servers, I only use 3, 7 and 8. The others are suffering from the same slow loading as I get when using Fidelity's web site for my mutual funds. In fact I log on to them and call a rep at the same time. The rep is always faster ! Please do not go in that direction. Keep the pages simple. Those of us who trade want the fastest possible access to orders and messages that trades went through.

Thanks,

Bob

The old pages are much easier to read than the new ones on the multiple colors. Easy access to charts and news on the same page would be nice, but ONLY if the speed, legibility, and compactness of the data are not sacrificed.

I appreciate your asking us for our opinions.

Peter, it's as easy to fling insults on the Internet without fear of reprisal as it is to drive like an a**hole in complete disregard for other drivers. Unfortunately, too many people do both. Your input and presence here is a credit to you and your company. Just ignore those comments said here that go beyond reasonable criticism, and remind the thread once in a while that you're only human like the rest of us.

Then again, if you were fishing for a compliment or some positive remarks to balance the negative, I'm happy to oblige. ;-) Datek may have some growing pains, but thank you for continuing to respond directly to customers and trying to make things better.

Peter,

I used to work as a country customer support manager for a computer company. And I know very well that painful feeling, the one which comes after you worked hard on some improvement intended to make customers' life easier, but instead of "thank you" you get a lot of harsh responses. The lesson I had to learn is that it is absolutely necessary to strip customer's message from his emotions. If you care for your customer you should know what to do with his message. As to emotions, do not take them personally, for their sole purpose is just to add visibility to the message. Nothing more.

Kind regards,
Alex

I have an account and made my first Datek trade today. I have an eSchwab account that I love except for the price. I finally made the decision to go with a second account for my more active trading and it came down to SureTrade or Datek. One of the deciding factors for me was your participation on SI. The SureTrade tread is much less active and even though Datek's customers are sometimes apt to overstate emotionally, they do care ALOT. Keeping the old and responding to this thread made my decision easier. Thanks.

Like I said in an earlier post, why not have two server farms,
one fancy one, and a plain ruthless fast one for trading and getting
the RT quotes. I'm psositive that when DATEK will deliver LEVEL II
you need lighting fast servers, and maybe compression before
encryption is an option to reduce internet bandwidth. VPN will
be the way to go. (VirtualPrivateNetworks)

Peter, I too know the feeling: "Ungratefull sods after all the work we've done...". But I've noticed that the ire seems proportional to the feeling that Datek doesn't care.

Listen carefully. There is a quiet desperation in some of these messages. On days when the Web is near stall, every non-essential kb can add many seconds to trade execution/confirmation times. What may appear to you as surley ingratitude is, just perhaps, a little fear.

Regards,

Bill

Unfotunately, A and B are not mutually exclusive, but if you require a choice, it is A by far. Stick to what " brings u here." As long as you keep your commissions low, you really shouldn't want the occasional investor anyway. And they're the ones who are attracted to the colors, etc. The daytraders and active traders are who got you here, and will keep you here. Low prices get offset by high volume.

If you furnish charts and news in plain vanilla wrapping, you also don't have to make us choose between A and B. You CAN do both.

Let me clarify that answer. My primary reason was for moving a part of one of my accounts over to Datek was speed. Pure, raw speed. Pages that load in less than 10 seconds.

I don't want checking, mutual funds or option trading, but I don't mind if you offer it to those that want it, as long as it does not cause a slowdown for me.

Now, the "new" look (orders11 etc) is just plainly unusable as far as I am concerned. Some people may like it, but for me it is unacceptably slow and problematic.

As for "old classic" sites (like orders3), there is one reason why I don't use it - the lack of a convenient link to news/charts. If you make the final "classic" site like that, I am leaving.

That leaves the "new classic" site (like orders6), which is what I am currently using. It is quite acceptable, and although there is some unnecessary "fluff" like the fonts and fancy fractions, I can live with that....I see it as a waste, but it is a *minor* waste ... it does not add *that* many bytes to the data I download per page.

My 4 cents:
One vote and one question.

MOOR07-A

Question: I have two browsers open right now. One on the new Java server and one on the express server. On my portfolio pages the current prices on 2 of 3 stocks that I have tonight are different between the two versions. How do the quote prices differ? I've noticed the new java version not keeping up with current price as well as the old servers (IMO) with using my PC Quote level II service as a comparison. Don't worry I'm not using your prices for any decisions since I've got the premium PCQuote service anyway.

IMO, this is the best brokerage for the buck to trade NASD.

Peter, Sorry if you took me as "harsh" and "insulting". But you finally listened this time. Sometimes that IS what it takes. I've been reading this thread since the start and have had a Datek account for over a year and a half. People were complaining about the new interface over a month ago. But Datek kept changing the servers anyway. Believe me, I only want the best for Datek. And when you don't listen to your customers, You insult Us. That said, I think you know where I stand on the interface issue. If you have to "have" the razzle-n-dazzle, at least leave servers 3,7, and 8 alone. Keep them with the old "non-classic" interface. Many, if not all on this thread would prefer it that way as you have found out. We would probably like to have server 6 back the way it was also... that was one of the more reliable ones. And when it changed, that IS what finally torqued me. I make my appologies... sorry. As somebody put in a earlier post, you know which servers are being used the most. If the old interface servers get the most business, then allocate more servers back to that interface in the future....

Peter, Datek IS the best of on-line brokers that I have used so far. I sincerely hope you will keep it that way. Thanks for listening....

Regards.

John

Peter,

I've been pretty quiet around here for a while. Anyone who has read my posts on SI from time to time will see that I'm not the most loyal fan of Datek OnLine, but I have always tried to be objective. I'm still a customer because I haven't found anyone who is obviously doing better.

I'd like to take this opportunity to point out a major flaw in Datek's way of doing business. I have followed Datek's instructions in the past, submitting issues via personal email, and waiting weeks upon weeks for a response. The last one I got was from someone who obviously hadn't read my original note in the first place, and that was about six weeks after the fact. It was insulting!! I agree with your position that we refrain from personal insults. I have tried to do that, and to date I think it is fair to say that as a result I have been pretty much ignored by your customer service department. The simple fact is the only way to get Datek's attention and to have any input is to flame them, or at least agitate in a public forum.

Now you are here taking a poll on an issue of concern to all Datek customers, using an medium that has no official connection to your customer base, available only to subscribers to SI at the tune of $125, or $200, or whatever the registration fee is now, without any direct notification to your customers. This is unconscionable.

Datek says they want to be the best. Rise above the rest of the crowd and start paying attention to your customers using a forum that is appropriate to address their individual concerns.

Dan

I find the original classic to be much more readable than the
new classic. I like the background colors in the table cells
in the portfolio, however, so my preference for the original
should not be interpreted as disliking colors altogether.
I don't need fancy fractions. I'm happy with the original
classic, but an improvement to the speed on the quotes page
could be achieved be ditching the graphical Datek logo. Why
do you need it? Nobody but customers can use the page anyway.

Peter, a general suggestion for the benefit of short traders. There's obviously a list out there that our short trades are checked against to see if we can borrow the shares. How about giving us a place to look at this list of stocks? (even better would be how many are available to short).

Thanks,
Marc
