Ken,

Some of the Pentium techologies came from the Alpha. This is why Intel is settling with DEC.

Technology? Just where DID the 8080,8086,8088,80286(brain dead),80386,80486,pentium (and family) come from? Were these 'copied' from a source I do not know of? Or does the Intel technology get copied by others?

Intel innovations are fully exhausted after i486DX. Or, you might want to say that Intel found that it was easier and faster to copy from others as they "thought" that the evidences are impossible to dig out from silicons.

May I remind you to read and listen to the followings?

Digital, Cyrix sue Intel over patents
news.com

These two companies have been hurt by Intel illegal copying. There are many more victims just do not have enough resources to take Intel to courts for patent infringement suits. Even they could not take legal actions against Intel, it does not mean that Intel has been clean at all.

That's Intel!

Look I like Intel. I have 200 shares, but let's be correct here.

It is a marketing and technological optimizer, not a real
barn-burning innovator.

Look at the PA-RISC, PowerPC, Alpha etc. They were ALL better
technology chips because they did NOT have to have x86 reverse
compatibility. BUT, intel blasted them because of

1- x86 reverse compatibility which everybody wanted/needed.
2- Absolutely superb manufacturing knowhow, cookie cutter fabs
plants up in no time, and virtually identical. Almost PERFECT ecxecution
3- Paranoid and attentive management, very FOCUSED [Good]
4- Marketing knowhow.

That's my 0.02c
Take care
