When I listened to the conference call, I heard Cal, I think, say that production MKII switches were now shipping. Later, his answer was clarified somewhat when he said that they were shipping but he could not say whether it was going to end-users. If I heard that right, the question is does he mean only shipped to OEMs for evaluation or does he mean that they are starting to ship to an OEM on an OEM deal? Clearly if the later, that would not be Bull as I remember that they were taking the 1/4 speed old switch. ron

Hey Craig,

Good to hear you in on the conference call. I appreciate the many people who have posted thoughts today. I think you asked some decent questions. Seems that Ancor's new management is getting the company more streamlined and I am glad to see it...of course, this has been obvious, but it is good to see (ie. rid of some resellers, more focus to storage, and hiring more for what the need and getting rid of some others).

Of course, the bad news was that there wasn't any 'big' news today (ie. Im always hopeful of a big oem announcement :-)...but other than that, things seemed fairly predictable...just an awful quarter revenue number, with more losses, but new money in the bank with a better deal than Reg D last year, new guy in Frane from Seagate, and still think that second half this year is when they see Storage FC taking off.

I really liked a few things.
-- They mentioned that they think they see one main competitor and that is Brocade and they also mention that they believe they are the only ones shipping a FC-AL switch. Oems will need AL, of course.

-- I think Ken responded to the Paine Webber australian dude that his vision was that Ancor still sees that FC will be the major building block for storage in the future and that they still see second half '98 for it to start with UNIX and then second half of '99 for NT for volume shipments. This got me excited to hear again, of course. Does someone have his exact quote?

-- It almost seems like Ancor almost wants to get rid of FC for the LAN and just concentrate on storage, but that they keep getting people that find themselves that need FC for the LAN (ie. IBM today)...this is kind of funny, but it is unpredictable and this has made the next two quarters hard to predict (ie. bc they are obviously more dependent of LAN for revenues for 1Q and 2Q as they wait for supposed storage ramp-up). Its like the FC LAN is a big boomerang and they chuck it out and it just keeps coming back :-)...However, they seemed a little more affectionate towards the FC LAN this conference call then last.

-- I am very interested in hearing exactly what MKIIs successors may look/act like.

-- I also wished someone would ask about how many potential oem's they see out there for their high end switches. There are a lot of big storage companies out there as we have discussed many times, but I like Roy's thoughts about how only a select few can use and integrate a switch profitably.

One just has to ask, if Ancor still sees second half 98 for volume shipments to start for storage (like a 'hockey stick' growth, I believe Cal said?) and it takes 6-9 months for oems to evaluate for sales, and Ancor currently may be the only one shipping AL...Well, Hmmmmmmm...:-)

Always cautious in this story stock, but still feel very good about it and the new management thus far.

all imho,
pigboy
