Edwin, welcome to SI and the Fibre Channel Cosmos and thanks for imparting your knowledgeable view. You seem to have a pretty good picture of Fibre Channel and its future. Are you in the biz too?

In regards to Vixel, you wrote:

<<...when a node is added to or removed from an operating loop the loop is interrupted and must re-initialize. ...So Vixel is probably implying added functionality to their Hubs which might enhance overall bandwidth and enable insertion or removel of nodes without interrupting ongoing conversations. >>

Vixel uses a GigaBit Interface Converters (GBIC) to mitigate Arbitrated-Loop node insertion/removal at the transceiver(s). It was developed with SUNW, CPQ, and AMP. I would think this capability would be desirable to clients eyeing FC-AL Hubs.

Edwin S,
Thanks for answering my message in the bottle. I'll try to think up more. I'm envious that you are so close to the unfolding technology and get to help it along toward its potential. I am struck by your firm belief that FC IS a substantial technologic advancement, that alone will keep me working to follow the progress.

Do you ever read G Gilder? He has a list of ASCENDANT technologies. He has WDM, CDMA, JAVA, SiGe,ect, but no FC company on that list. Maybe someone like you could help convince him to add FC to the list? Do you think FC would make the cut?
