I join 6 cats in praising President Eisenhower. Although recent history has labeled him
the Do-Nothing President, I think he will undergo reconsideration and top out as one of
our best Presidents. Among other things, President Eisenhower tried to warn us of the
Military-Industrial Complex. I just remembered that I think I may have posted this
before, so please forgive me if its a repeat. I would add to what 6 cats has said to say
racism and the Mafia, or organized crime, remained alive and well, no matter the
Administration in Washington.

Holly,

I cadidly must admit I do not know enough about this. I have not read enough on him:-(

Eisenhower also warned against big government in that same farewell speech.

Funny thing, there have been only two successful presidencies in the latter half of the 20th century, and both by men who came to politics late in life (their 50's) after having had extraordinarily successful careers in other fields. Most of the failures set their sights on their ultimate prize early on.

Some seek the Presidency to be someone, others seek the Presidency to do something.

Also amazing: both men were initially reluctant warriors and had to be drafted. Both Dem and Republican parties had wanted them as theirs initially. (Yes, before Reagan became a Republican there had been efforts to get him to run for office as a Dem).

And when they did run, they only won in landslides.

Seems the lesson is clear: if you want a successful President, elect someone who has been successful in the world outside of politics, not just another career politician.

(One may argue whether Jimmy Carter was a career politician or not, having entered politics at the age of 31, the fact is that he was not an unalloyed prior success in either endeavor, business or politics. It is doubtful that he could have been reelected guv if state law had allowed and in 1976 he was elected by Nixon, and then just barely).
