The PBS piece was a rehash from 1991. It featured Dalleck, a "historian" whose views Caro thoroughly discredited in the 1990 book. It is strange, because Caro was featured prominently in the precedent JFK profile. My only guess is that since Texas PBS put the 1991 docu together with the assistence of the LBJ Library, they wanted LBJ to emerge with some sort of reputation. It was still damning without Caro, though. Peace candidate Johnson trashes Goldwater as "warmonger", wins great victory and then adds 500,000 to Vietnam. Over and over his advisors were shown asking him what the plan was - but he had none - he just didn't want to be the first president to lose a war. LBJ pushed McNamara out because he thought Mac had had a breakdown. So he promotes Mac to the World Bank where Mac pushes massive loans on 3rd World countries who use it for arms or projects that made no sense, further impoverishing the poor. Isn't it amazing that the man responsible for the biggest boner in U.S. business history - the Edsel - would be put in charge of Vietnam and then the World Bank? PBS showed the four summers of burning cities - 150+ burned - some never recovered. Moynihan told us that the Great Society was not a "War on Poverty" but rather a war on the poor. He warned that it would destroy the black family and it did. One wonders that if this was to be karma for stealing the 1948 election, why then did everyone else get the punishment?
